Generation Replacement Rogaw Light Act “Rogue Legacy 2” -The sometimes the archer of the color, and at one time, a boxer bitten by a vampire [Developer Interview]

This project is an interview with the developer of the new indie game that you are interested in. This time, we will provide a mini -interlocated show to developers for the developers “ Rogue Legacy 2 “, a generational replacement rogue light action that was officially released on April 29 for Cellar Door Games development and PCs.

This work is an action RPG that combines the elements of metroidvania and rogue light, which captures the stage that is generated randomly while changing generations. Many new elements have been added, including the introduction of a 2.5D style that combines handwritten background and 3D characters, and the introduction of a “House” system that enhances the functions of a new weapon, area, and metroidvania. At the time of writing, it is not compatible with Japanese.

“Rogue Legacy 2” is being distributed for 2,570 yen.

— First, please introduce yourself. What is your favorite game?

Teddy Lee (Teddy) Hello, I’m Teddy Lee, a game designer of Cellar Door Games. When he was a child, he started developing games using tools like RPG Maker 95. He has been more than 20 years since then, but he still doesn’t know what he is doing.

It is difficult to choose one of the most favorite games, but the most memorable works are “Super Mario RPG”, “Chrono Trigger” and “Holy Sword Legend 2”.

――Why did this work developed?

TEDDY: The reason for the development of this work was that after the completion of the previous work “Rogue Legacy”, there were still many things I wanted to do. The only reason I decided to make a sequel after five years after the previous work is that I needed to go a little away from this genre. As a result, I think it was a good decision.

During the period from the previous work to this work, the development team was able to grow. Thanks to this, I think that the content of this work has become more aggressive.

―― Please tell me the characteristics of this work.

TEDDY This work is a rogue light, and every time the character dies, the child will take over. Each child is unique, so you can experience different experiences every time you play. At one point, you will play as a weak color archer, and at times you will play as a boxer bitten by a vampire.

This work is a light game, but the difficulty is very high. Unlike other general roglikes, they do not return to the square even if they die. All the bosses you have defeated are defeated, all of which you earned can be used to strengthen the heroes.

The ability to be able to raise the level of the player is very important, because I wanted to give the battle system deep. Because you can strengthen the players, it is easier for players of various skills to play. Very good players can be cleared immediately, and casual gamers can take time to strengthen their players, so they can easily defeat the boss.

――What kind of person do you want this work to play?

Teddy was mainly developed for those who like 2D actions and improvisation. This work is very difficult, but players have high mobility, so they can avoid enemy attacks.

— Is there any work influenced by this work?

The TEDDY battle and map movement systems have been greatly influenced by the “Metroid” series and the old “Kuju Castle Dracula” series (“Circle of the Moon” “Castle Vannia -Dance of the Xiaen”). Many people seem to have been influenced by the “Makusan Castle Dracula X Moon Lady Song”, but I didn’t have a playStation as a child, so it will be a long time later. I didn’t have the opportunity to play this work.

Roglike elements are influenced by the indie game “Dungeons of DREDMOR”. It is often said that he was influenced by “The Binding of ISAAC” and “Spelunky”, and these are certainly wonderful games, but they have never played these works until the previous work was released.

――Do you plan to support this work? Is volunteer translation possible?

TEDDY There is a plan to support Japanese! Volunteer translation is great, but you can’t ask someone for such a hard work. Approximately 68,000 words appear in this work, so I would like to cooperate with the localization company to deliver solid things to Japan.

――What had an impact on the development of the new Coronavirus?

Teddy We are indie studio, so there is no office. Usually, all development members work remotely. When we started the development of this work, we decided to open an office for members living in Toronto. The office is a home office that only works three days a week.

As the infection of the new Corona began to expand, we started working from home again. It was very easy because I just returned to the original shape (laughs).

――Is it okay to distribute or monetize this work?

TEDDY, of course! I want you to distribute our games, and it’s better if you can make money!

– Finally, please give a message to Japanese readers.

Thank you for reading Teddy this interview. If this work supports Japanese, I would be glad if you could enjoy it! We grew up playing Japanese games, so I think it would be great if our game could inspire someone again.

Also, please make “Super Mario RPG 2”! If Nintendo wants, we will make it!

–thank you.
